My idea for my 3 Minute Wonder is on the topic of cystic fibrosis(CF) which I have chosen as this inherited disease is less spoken of and many people have very little knowledge and information on CF, as well as having a family friend with this illness. The format which I am going to present this topic with elements of an interactive documentary due to the use of talking heads, while still using elements of an observational and expository documentary. This will present the audience with a genre of reality by the use of interviews. This will also include educational information with the use of facts on this disease and observing a patients every day life living with CF.
This documentary is going to be targeted at individuals which can use this documentary to create not only a personal relationship within the media text and relate to this disease whether they have CF or not, (UPDATE) but it will also be appropriate for peek time for anyone a psychographic interest in real mundane stories. Demographically this documentary is going to be targeted at both male and female, as well as all age ranges depending on their interests. This type of audience is not targeted at a specific class as it doesn't matter whether an audience who can relate to this documentary or has an interest in reality have a middle or lower class lifestyle etc... This production will also be aimed at aspirers which may be inspired by this situation and the positive aspects which this patient has towards life even with this life threatening disease.
The aim of my 3 Minute Wonder is to bring the audiences attention to this disease due to having a life expectancy of an average of 35 years while still presenting the audience with a positive side to something which is not positive. Many individuals have very little knowledge on CF and how it affects a persons life, therefore my aim is to present the audience with a documentary showing how an individual with CF copes and how it affects their life and the people around them.
To film this documentary, I will need to have access to the patient's house which I have permission for and is easily accessible due to it being nearby, therefore travel will not be an issue to film this documentary. This production will include a patient with CF, the patient's mother and sibling. There will also be a short interview of a nurse from Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital which explains the patient's disease.
Sample Questions:
(To the patient) - When did you first find out that you had CF?
How long in a years period do you spend in hospital?
Would you say that you live a normal lifestyle while your not in hospital?
(To the mother) - How has having a daughter with CF affected your life? e.g. work life
(To the sibling) - How does it feel knowing that it could have been you which ended up with this disease and not your sister?
To produce my documentary, there will be no props and costumes needed apart from the occasional shots of the patient using her gastronomy and taking medication to present the audience with reality. As this is the case, I will not need to buy any props or costumes therefore I will not need a budget. The equipment I will need to film is a video recorder, and a tripod if needed.
