Continuity Sequence Evaluation

In this post I will be evaluating my continuity sequence above. In the first shot that was taken, I used an over the shoulder shot to establish the setting which in this case is a school corridor scene and this makes the audience aware of the setting.

This shot was taken, knowing there was a student in the background which makes the scene look much more realistic. The shot used is known as an eyeline match, as you can see the character looking at something which then cuts to what the character is looking at. This type of shot shows the audience the significance of the two characters. I used the title of the film on this first shot which is almost like foreshadowing as it lets the audience have an idea of what this short film is going to consist of. The colors that I used was stereo typically red which is symbolic for 'love' which is then contrasted with the color black and this gives a feel of negativity to the sequence which can also foreshadow that something bad or dramatic may happen later on (which it does). The lighting which was used in this shot was ambient lighting. This use of lighting makes the scenery look much more natural looking and the fade transition that I used also smoothly opens the scene.

Another shot that was used was pan camera movement. This type of movement allows the camera to swivel from left to right and in this case, the camera started from the right angle and then swiveled left to capture the type of shot that I was looking for.

This shot starts from a high angle, looking down at the actor walking. This angle could in fact suggest that this character is weak/vulnerable when really this character has a fair amount of power due to the story line whereas this character is theoretically cheating on her boyfriend which is ironic. The change of costume of this character also shows the passing of time and that it is a different day. The pan camera movement finishes as a wide shot, this is so that the audience can learn about the environment and possibly the character as this is the first time the audience gets to see this location. The lighting of this shot is also ambient like many of the other shots which can show what time of day it is as well as creating natural looking shots.

A shot that I used that I think is effective to the sequence was the use of editing to create a match on action shot. This shot shows one of the characters start to walk away, and then ends as a long shot of the the character which was walking away and the remaining character chasing after her. A match on action shot also helps to show continuity, which it has done in this shot.

In this edit, you can also see time passing by without the use of a transition. This is seen as the shot before this, there are children in the background which was unintentional but also makes the sequence much more realistic and as you can see in this shot, the park is empty. This editing also adds to the time passing by as the image is much more darker than the previous image by the use of ambient lighting. The props in this shot makes it clear to the audience that the characters are in a park, which is seen as the characters 'usual spot' which is mentioned. The close up shot of the message also brings realism to the sequence as the audience can clearly see what is happening at this stage of the film.

In conclusion to this evaluation, I feel as though I have re-caped and learned more in much further detail compared to GCSE media studies. I also learned about the continuity system which I had only covered briefly, which I can now include in my work. I enjoyed the editing process of this task due to becoming familiar with Adobe Premier Pro and using different editing tools and music samples which fitted in and made my finishing sequence as best as I possibly could with a lack of knowledge on Adobe Premier Pro.

  1. A very good piece Alycia - well done. You did not mention eyeline match cuts, Do you know what they are? Otherwise this is pretty thorough and accurate.
